reveals how a Bolo rig came to his rescue on the River Severn

MY MATCHES lately have been a tale of bad luck and misfortune! Bad draws, a few section wins but unable to claim a main list place.

Still all you can do is keep going and I was hopeful that the fourth round of the River Severn Float Championship at Bewdley might present me with an opportunity to get things back on track as I was lying in second position going into the match.

The river here lends itself to all sorts of floatfishing approaches and that’s what I like about it. There are fast shallow swims and there are others that are deep.

It’s a competition that tests your floatfishing skills to the limit with running line, pole and whip all playing a part over the six-match series.

Round Four saw me draw peg 4 at the top end of the length, which I knew was a good feeder swim at times for barbel.

At least there would be fish there even if I couldn’t use the best method to catch them!

I made sure that I knew what the contours of the river were like by carefully plumbing up all over the swim to the middle and also downstream.

I was hoping to find around 7ft to 8ft down the middle and was quite surprised to find that it was actually up to 11ft in places.

With a fair bit of pace on the river but a good colour I felt that I could attack the middle line for barbel and chub and lightly feed a closer
