Anglers of all abilities will love Short Ferry Caravan Park

-

ITHIN sight of the towering Lincoln Cathedral sits Short Ferry Caravan Park. It’s the ultimate one-stop shop for the angler looking to bring the family for a holiday, the pleasure angler seeking a quiet day’s fishing, or the club holding a match on one of the many well-stocked lakes.

Sited on the banks of the Old River Witham just outside Lincoln, Short Ferry is a familyowned holiday park with accommodation in two bedroom, static caravans decked out with all the mod cons that you’d expect to make your stay go with a swing.

There’s also a touring park if you want to bring your own caravan or camper.

The kids will be kept busy in the play area, enjoying the ball games area, swimming pools (seasonal), arcade and family room, while in the park are the usual toilet and shower facilities, a laundry room with automatic washers and dryers and a shop selling groceries, frozen food, caravan accessories, fancy goods and newspapers. There’s also the Tyrwhitt Arms Pub just a short walk away.

Anglers can stock up on bait and tackle at the Short Ferry Angling shop before heading out to one of the five lakes on offer or, when the river season begins, a two-mile stretch of the Old River Witham and the Barlings Eau drain.

The large Marina Lake holds mainly silver fish, while Willow Lake is a commercial-style lake holding lots of 3lb-6lb carp, plus barbel, tench, chub, crucians and rudd.

Should you wish to take the kids for a few hours, head to Owl Lake that’s been created for the younger angler and offers a bite a chuck from small carp, tench, roach, bream and rudd.

Competition anglers will get on well with the Match Lake, home mainly to carp but with some big bream and plenty of roach in residence too – and if you fancy catching a whacker or three get on the specimen Woodbine Lake, as it holds carp to over 25lb.

That leaves the river fishing, both the Old Witham and Barlings Eau being tributaries of the main River Witham. In summer, bream are dominant, with 100lb catches taken, but you can also pop down for a few hours in the evening with basic tackle and catch small roach, rudd and perch.

Both waters also hold plenty of pike for the predator angler.
