Biggest perch

One five-pounder would be an event for any angler – so this was a truly incredible feat

Feed tips you must try

Dick Walker once said that the perch was the biggest fish of all – which is hard to argue against when you take a look at Dan Gale’s pair of 5lb-plus fish...

MOST of you will probably know how hard it is to catch a 3lb perch in a session, let alone two ‘fives’, but Southampton-based specimen hunter Dan Gale managed it in fine style back in April. The 5lb 1oz and 5lb 2oz stripeys fell within seconds of each other to simple maggot feeder tactics from a gravel pit in the Cotswolds – with lobworm hookbaits doing the damage.

What made this catch unique is that Dan used a Spomb to introduce groundbait, chopped worms and casters over his chosen spot to help bring a bite.

He told Angling Times: “I still can’t believe that I’ve had a catch like this. It’s really difficult to get my head around it.

“The 5lb 2oz fish was in the net as I was giving it a rest after unhooking it, then the other rod went rattling off, so I had both the big ones in the net at the same time. It really was incredible!”

The action didn’t end there either, as Dan backed his brace up with fish of 4lb 10oz, 3lb 11oz and 2lb 13oz, along with a big bream of 11lb 8oz and two tench – the bigger of which weighed in at 7lb 13oz.

What a session!
