Skimmers win it for Starlets man Ed Warren

Ed Warren’s National win

Ed Warren – Angling Trust Division One National champion, 9-180, Shropshire Union Canal

FEW titles can match that of Division One National champion.

And when Sensas Starlets man Ed Warren drew close to where the Individual National was won from seven days earlier on the canal, the restaurant owner allowed himself half a thought about being crowned the winner. A few hours later he was holding the famed silver trophy.

That peg was in F section at Cheswardine but Ed still doubted whether the skimmers that had won the match the week before would be at home, given the pressure the canal had been under. However, his answer wasn’t long in coming as he netted a 1lb 8oz fish just 10 minutes in.

“Starlets’ team plan was to catch big fish straight away. We’d found that early in the match was when you had the best chance, so I fished single red maggot at around 10m at the base of the far shelf where a big tree overhung the canal,” Ed said. “I’d fed two balls of Sensas Matchblend with a bit of chopped worm and caster in it and when I netted that fish it was a case of ‘job done for the team’. Now I could settle down and see if any more were about.”

A speeding boat killed the peg for the next 40 minutes, prompting Ed to change to a new line at the same distance, but further down his peg away from the commotion. That was a master stroke – he found the skimmers once again using the same feeding ploy and rig to finish with 9-180.
