How Wootton won £70k

Rob Wootton – Maver Mega Match This champion, 42-175, Maver/Dynamite Baits Hayfield Lakes

BRITISH match fishing’s biggest prize – £70,000 – was secured with a last gasp carp that saw the mega money heading Leicestershire man Rob Wootton’s way.

He totalled 42-175 to win a tense Maver Match This Final at Hayfield Lakes.

Competing against a star-

studded line-up, Dynamite Baits man Rob snared the ghost carp in the final 90 seconds of the match on bomb and pellet tactics to deny former winner Chris Cameron.

Rob took an early lead on the tip, only to see it eaten into by several anglers as the day wore on.

A change to the Method feeder cast to the island produced two bonus carp before he went back on the bomb with banded 8mm pellet fished into open water.

“I knew that last fish was going to be massive, so I took my time with it and made sure it counted. It was a huge relief when it went into the net,” Rob said.

“When anglers were catching more than I was and my bomb line had dried up I picked up my feeder rod and cast to the island point 65m away, which I’d deliberately left alone until then. That produced a 5lb ghost carp and a much smaller carp in consecutive casts. Things then quietened down in the last 20 minutes and I went back on the bomb, but the tip refused to move.

“Then, with barely a minute left, the rod bent round and soon that 5lb ghost carp was in the net!”
