SIX WINTER VENUES FAMED FOR THEIR REDFIN SPORT

DESPITE changeable conditions of late, there is still plenty of roach action on offer throughout the Midlands. Expect unrivalled sport over the next few weeks, especially during a mild spell. Try these venues for a mixed bag, with the outside chance of a specimen!

RIVER WELLAND, SPALDING TOWN CENTRE, LINCOLNSHI­RE

Big bags of roach can be expected at this free fishing spot. Coloured water will bring results throughout the stretch, with clear conditions seeing tightly-shoaled fish, which can result in the biggest bags should the location be right. OLD RIVER NENE, MARCH, CAMBS

TRUSTHORPE MAIN DRAIN, LINCS

Running for several miles, all swims are available to the angler free of charge. Simple trotting

tactics on this narrow drain will bring results. Breadflake over liquidised bread is a stand-out method, as all roach love a helping of bread. RIVER SOAR, KEGWORTH, LEICS

This is an excellent venue for catching roach right through the season, with the moorings below the bridge a noted area. The river will respond to a variety of floatfishi­ng tactics on rod or pole. Baiting with hemp and casters, or maggots, with a matching hookbait will produce plenty of bites and you never quite know what will bite next on the Soar. MILL FARM FISHERY, LUTTERWORT­H, LEICS

The Main Lake is extremely deep, however, fishing on the drop with a waggler will produce big bags of roach, with many fish averaging 12oz. A good method to combat the deep water is to fish the slider float. Pole tactics will also work well. Feed small balls of groundbait laced with caster over the top regularly. PEATLING POOLS, PEATLING PARVA, LUTTERWORT­H, LEICS

Parva Pool is the smallest of the lakes here, only a quarter of an acre. However, don’t be put off as for a small pond the fish in here grow to a good size, with roach to 3lb!
