TOP TIPS

-

1 To give yourself the best chance of success on the Wye try to pick good conditions. A falling, clearing river with 2ft-3ft on at Hereford is ideal. 2 Sardines are my favourite bait on the river but are soft and tricky to recast. I place the trebles through the snout and flank if the deadbait is defrosted. 3 Mobility is key, so travel light. I never carry more than a single rod. 4 Be careful! If you fall into the Wye in the winter it’s potentially fatal, so consider every step and be alert to danger. 5 The river is very snaggy, so I use strong line to minimise losses. In most instances it’s your trebles that get snagged, and the high breaking strain allows me to bend the hooks and free the rest of the tackle.
