The Continental way
I WOULD opt for a Continental approach to the closed season. Categorise rivers as ‘First’ or ‘Second’ (salmonids or silvers) with grayling, trout, pike and others each having their own shutdown to correspond roughly with the spawning period.
The record-chasers on our rivers do so at optimum weight time. For example, dace are now in spawn and will weigh considerably more than in a couple of months’ time.
