Drennan Oxford man Mick Denton headed a list of impressive weights as he drew peg 22 on Oak Lake and fished maggot at 14m and pellet and corn at 6m to take 183-0-0 of carp and F1s to the scales. Second place went to Andy Flitz, with 164-3-0 of carp and F1s on bomb and corn and maggot at 13m from peg 11 on the same lake. This was the final big open match before the Winter League Final drew a big crowd, but it was local rod Dave Thornton who won with a massive 200-10-0 of carp and F1s. Drawing peg 21 on Oak Lake, Dave fished maggot at 13m to finish well clear of Andy Dyson on peg 11 on the same lake. A big turnout found the river in tougher form than of late, but even so it needed 15lb to make the top six. Browning Hot Rods men took first and second, Stu Northrop winning from the culvert peg at Wigston’s Bridge with 19-15-0 of roach on breadpunch at 5m, and Paul Durrant a couple of pegs away also using punch at 6m for 19-2-0 of roach. Despite it being February, winner Tony Whickham found his 108-5-0

carp net by fishing down the edge of peg 5 on Warren Pool with corn over micro pellet to land fish to 12lb. Runner-up Neil Russell, on peg 48 of Lambsdown Lake, fished Method feeder and pellet or wafters to plunder 75-8-0 of carp. On the team front, Carpet Baggers won with eight points to move nine clear at the top of the table. The Moaners side couldn’t catch up on Rookery Waters, who finished with 63 points. Jamie McGuire, on Raven Lake peg 6, had 61-5-0 of F1s on maggot at 13m.

The pegs around the footbridge on the 20ft Drain will be the ones to draw in the Winter League Final as they produced big weights in this final practice. This recently restocked section of canal provided a massive winning roach bag for Paul Taylor. The Wigston man banged out a level 30-0-0 of fish to 1lb 8oz from his peg on the County Arms section as he fished caster down the track at 7m. Second place went to Steve Oakes with a more modest, but still creditable, 9-3-0 of roach and skimmers. He fished pinkie over groundbait from the Manor section.
