Anglers practising for the Winter League boosted numbers on Thursday, but weights were low, 79-10-0 winning the day for Langport rod Colin Dyer. He drew peg 102 on Cary Lake, where he fished the bomb with meat and corn for a net of carp to 8lb. Second went to Wally Adcock with 67-4-0 from peg 114 on Campbell Lake.

Result: 1 C Dyer, Langport, 79-10-0; 2 W Adcock, Viaduct, 67-4-0; 3 C Davis, Viaduct, 64-14-0; 4 A Saunders, Viaduct, 54-15-0; 5 A Quantrill, Viaduct, 47-14-0.

BASINGSTOK­E CANAL AA WINTER LEAGUE (SAT) Basingstok­e Canal (39 pegs)

Second place on the day behind Tubertini Old Boys was enough for Homestores Mosella to extend their league lead to 10 points from the Sensas Towpath Teds side. Top rod was Homestores man James Pitman with 12-5-8 from a peg below the swing bridge, where he caught skimmers on breadpunch at 12m and a few big perch on worm down the middle. John Weeden was second with 12-6-0, and he included a 3lb perch in his final tally.

Good weights decided the main placings in this memorial event, Sensas M5 Angling rod Steve Lovell leading the way with 16-12-0 from peg 46 at Catholics. He fished stick float and maggot and maggot feeder for a net of roach, dace and chublets. Tony West followed in second with 16-1-0 from peg 40 at Trill as he

used the bomb with bread and corn to net chub.

LAKE JOHN (SUN) Top Lake (27 pegs)

A full house were out practising for the Winter League and despite a hard frost, the leading weights were good. Best of them was the 66-8-0 of Mick Scanlan, who drew peg 35 and opted to leave the pole in the bag, instead fishing waggler and maggot or pellet for a net of bream and skimmers. Paul Solen and Richard Bond shared second with 41-0-0 apiece off pegs 31 and 8, respective­ly.

MAINLINE BAIT COLEMAN’S COTTAGE FISHERY SPRING LEAGUE (SUN) Wood, Pathfield & Stepfield Lakes (63 pegs)

Rob Heath topped this latest leg at the Essex venue. He drew peg

12 on the Pathfield Lake and went over to the island at 14.5m with maggot and breadpunch to pick off carp to 6lb plus F1s which together went 77-4-0. That was more than 10lb in front of runner-up Russell Grimes who, from peg 2 on Wood Lake, replied with 67-0-0 of carp and F1s taken on maggot.

OCKENDON BAIT & TACKLE (SUN) Puddledock Farm, Snake Lake (35 pegs)

The form pegs produced once again with a big winning weight for John Brooks. The Ockendon Bait & Tackle man drew peg 100 and fished maggot and corn at 11m towards the far bank to net carp to 6lb for a massive 194-2-0. That was well ahead of Simon Dyball on next-door peg 98, who fished maggot across to take 127-8-0 of carp to 5lb.

SLOUGH HOUSE LAKE WINTER SERIES (SUN) Bulphan (34 pegs)

The lake was in fine form despite the cold night, and former Essex County star Pete Vasey stretched his league lead with victory on 50-4-0. Drawing peg 12, Pete fished pellet at 14m to take bream and skimmers. That left Gary Bambury in second on peg 7 with 39-8-0 of bream and skimmers on waggler and pellet tactics.
