FOR the chance of some action in the cold, and providing it isn’t frozen, Westerly Lake in South Yorkshire is just the place to be!
This 1.5-acre water is picturesque and feature-filled. with willow-clad islands, overhanging marginal cover and open water.
Rich spring-fed water creates the perfect environment for fish to thrive. The water is noted for its silver fish, and even in the cold can produce sport with net-worthy roach. Try a simple pole or waggler set-up, feeding small amounts of groundbait, with pinkie or maggot hookbaits.
Bream here also offer unrivalled sport, with some anglers bagging up to 70 fish in a session. Try fishing the open water with a groundbait feeder and chopped worm or caster.
The perch in here grow very large, with fish to 3lb-plus a possibility. Try legering a lobworm hookbait over chopped worm and red maggots.
The water also boasts a good head of carp. Try fishing specimen style, tight to the islands, for fish to 20lb.
