MARCH was set to be a tricky time for me, with only one more pike trip remaining. But roach, carp and salmon would get the ball rolling, along with perch as they shoaled up prior to spawning.

The rivers are now out of bounds for all but game fish, but along with natural or man-made lakes we are blessed with canals.

March is when I get the pole out and practise this most deadly of methods for big fish.

I reckon if the perch are 13m out or closer there’s no better tactic than this. Usually you’ll stop getting bites only when the whole shoal is guesting in your keepnet.

My Drennan Acolyte carp pole is perfect for big stripeys, and I team it with a yellow carp bungee and 5lb Supplex fished direct to a size 8 hook and a lobworm tail – a basic but effective arrangemen­t.

Unlike a match angler I have no need for finesse. For a start I can pick my swim, which will
