Fishery of the Week

Plantation Lakes

-

SOME fisheries can only maintain your interest for a short while, but there are others offering so many challenges that you keep going back for more.

You’re likely to soon tire of venues where you are limited to perhaps one or two styles of fishing to keep bites coming, but Plantation Lakes is somewhere that you can try something different every time and still experience rod-bending sport.

Located in the Somerset village of Kingston Seymour, the three lakes are extremely diverse in character, and that policy has proved to be a wise one.

The Main Lake is a real mixed gem and holds large shoals of carp and silver fish.

One day could be spent chucking the straight lead and pinging pellets for mirrors and commons to double figures, while the next could see you set your mind on banking 50lb of quality roach and skimmers on the long pole.

Margin action can also be electric at this time of year, as can the pellet waggler as fish rise off the deck to bask in the spring sunshine.

Horseshoe Lake is the ideal place to hone a little finesse with pellet, maggot or corn to the islands under a light pole rig – a great way to get among the vast numbers of small carp.

Big-fish fanatics are also well catered for by the Specimen Lake, where a personal best could be lurking beneath the surface. Fish to over 20lb are reported every week and a wide range of attacks, including zig rigs, will put you in with the chance of a real lump.

Bait-Tech’s Tom Downing recently got stuck into the venue for the first time and claims it won’t be long before he is back again: “I set up a bomb rod and a long pole line while fishing on the Main Lake and I didn’t stop catching all day,” he said.

“Plantation Lakes is not the sort of place where you can do things half-heartedly and catch, but stick to the basics with the tactics you enjoy and you’ll get plenty of bites.

“I ended up with over 30lb of big skimmers and a dozen carp to double figures. This is a fantastic fishery that deserves all the praise it gets.”

Whether you are aiming to get a screaming take from a new pb, bag a netful of silvers or battle with a margin munter, Plantation Lakes is well worth a visit.
