North Spotlight on the Angel of the North Fishery Park plus top day-ticket lakes

-

AS SUMMER gets into full swing, anglers will be looking to spend an evening or two on the bank – but where can you go for some short session success?

Here at Angling Times we’re pleased to recommend what is arguably the most in-form evening venue in the country…

In just a three-hour match, Angel of the North Fishing Lakes in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, produced a staggering 257lb bag of carp and silvers.

The catch came from Bowes Lake, although it’s safe to say the whole complex is fishing its head off! But how can you join in on the action? Well, who better to tell you than venue owner of 17 years, Ann Adlington? Here’s what she had to say:

“The fishing is outstanding, to be honest! The big weight came from Bowes Lake, which has been producing loads of 100lbplus bags. It’s all waggler up in the water which is doing the business, using our fisherysupplied pellet with a 10mm bait on the hook and feeding 6mm or 3mm pellets over the top. They’re also catching in the edge, again feeding 3mm pellets and fishing one over the top.

“I think after such a long winter and a lack of anglers, it’s warmed up and anglers are introducing bait, to which the fish are really responding.

“The same lack also produced a huge bream of 13lb 2oz. I purchased 60 of them back in 2010, ranging between 5lb and 9lb, since when they’ve really packed on the weight, as well as spawning really well – there are now two-pounders being caught.

“The top lake, Lookout, produced 10 weights over 100lb last week. In here there is a 50:50 mix of carp and silvers, with some silver fish now pushing specimen size – one angler landed an ide of 5lb!

“Again on here it’s all pellet over pellet, although chopped worm, maggot and caster will produce plenty of silvers.

“From the beginning I always wanted quality fish, and with careful fishery management, keeping the water quality excellent with aerators and strict bait rules, the stocks really have come on a treat. We’ve done our utmost to create this fishery – our heart and soul has gone into

it, and all I ask is that visitors please respect our rules, stock and fishery. Do that and you can enjoy some of the best fishing for quality fish!” LOCATION: Bassetts Lookout, Northside, Birtley, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, DH3 1RF CONTACT: 0191 410 0449 PRICES: Adults £13 per day, £8 half day, concessions £11 per day, £7 half day, extra rod £5
