GO SHALLOW TO RAID FAR BANK RUSHES

Catch more tricky fish on snake lakes!

“A percentage of my feed goes right into the rushes”

ONE of the most effective methods of catching carp at this time of year is fishing shallow on the pole.

On snake lakes, in particular, this is a method that catches loads of fish and dominates match results.

Normally, when fishing shallow, most anglers will fish in open water or even down the track.

Now, this is great but sometimes carp, in particular, can be rather reluctant to move away from far-bank cover.

This is exactly why I’ve been targeting them right in the rushes with a slightly different approach to the norm… here’s how to go about it.

HOW TO GET THEM GOING

Feeding when fishing shallow is all about little and often, so basically I am looking to feed 4-6 pellets at a time.

When fishing shallow on snake

lakes up against rushes I like to do things slightly different, though.

The first thing I do is try and identify at least two spots on the far bank to fish shallow to.

What I’m ideally looking for are areas that allow me to get slightly tighter than normal to the rushes – with features such as cut-backs in the vegetation, for instance.

Once I’ve identified my two or three areas it’s then all about feeding them to try and pull fish into the area.

Now here comes the strange bit… I actually feed so that a percentage of my bait goes right into the rushes.

This way I get pellets which are hung up on the rushes so the fish can still get at them, but to do so they virtually have to come to the surface and suck it off the reeds.

The great thing about making the carp come up this high in the water is that they will give themselves away, and I can easily tell when they’re in these swims.

This makes rotating the lines you’re fishing really easy as you can fish other spots, watch for signs of fish, and then switch.
