CHUB

-

YOU’LL no doubt pick up a few chub if you adopt my barbel float tactics, but there’s a better way to fish for them that works well at the start of the season. This is roving, fishing every likely-looking nook and cranny with a freelined bait heavy enough to swing into position.

Slugs are my absolute go-to bait for this style of fishing. Chub love them and rarely will a fish refuse one, especially at the start of the season. They are a tough, dense bait that casts well, but sinks quite slowly and enticingly, waiting to be gobbled up!

Make the most of rainy days to get out into the garden and collect slugs. They can be difficult to find in hot sunny weather, when conditions for stalking chub are at their best. As an alternative, try a juicy lobworm, or a chunk of luncheon meat, but remember, these are really just poor alternatives to the king of chub baits.
