CATCHING the same fish twice isn’t rare – but banking the same carp on the same day, at the same time, exactly a year apart, in a 12-mile stretch of canal is going some!
That’s exactly what Michael Broome did at the weekend.
Fresh from the capture of two canal twenties from his boat on the Shropshire Union Canal, the 34-year-old got the rods out again on Saturday night.
The Wolverhampton angler told Carpfeed: “Last year, on July 15 at 8.30am I caught my first-ever carp out of this stretch of canal, which is easily 12 miles between locks, so a vast amount of water.
“Fast-forward to July 15 this year and I had just done the night on my boat, Arkwright. It was 7.40am and I had a run, pulled the fish in and realised it was the same fish I had last year.
“At this point I hadn’t realised it was the exact day and within an hour of the bite time the previous year.
“That afternoon I got home and when my phone connected to the WiFi I went to upload it to Facebook and there it was – the Facebook memory from a year ago holding the same fish! I couldn’t believe it!
“Same place, nearly the same time, same fish. I know carp are creatures of habit, but it’s blown my mind due to how big the stretch is and the circumstances.”
The fish weighed 13lb 7oz last year and 16lb this time round.
