BRAMPTON CANAL, BARNSLEY, SOUTH YORKSHIRE

An early start on this feature-filled cut is recommended if you are looking for a good catch of tench. The pole is the best approach, and a lobworm fished over groundbait against the far-bank bushes should see you connect with tincas in the 3lb-5lb bracket. The silver fish are an equally rewarding target on days when the tench aren’t feeding. A maggot and caster approach in the middle of the canal will catch skimmers, roach and perch. RIVER IRWELL, MANCHESTER, LANCASHIRE

Access to this section of river is available only to those who join Salford Friendly Anglers Society, which is Britain’s oldest angling club. However, signing up is actually free, so you simply cannot beat it for value! You’ll discover a range of pristine species on the river between the M60 and Agecroft. Simple dropshotting or light lure tactics can account for several small perch, while the more traditional approach of trotted maggots will score dace, chub and feisty wild brown trout. If you’re lucky you may even hook the odd barbel. Contact: www.salfordfriendly anglers.co.uk Price: Free fishing

RIVER TYNE, CORBRIDGE, NORTHUMBERLAND

During a recent RiverFest qualifier six double-figure nets were taken from the stretch between Corbridge and Wylam, mostly made up of triple-figure numbers of dace. A stick float or waggler with maggots is leading the way, and while some fish can be tempted on the pole, this stretch of the Tyne is first and foremost a trotting angler’s dream.
