Fishery of the Week Winfield Lakes

New owners transform fishery’s fortunes

-

WINFIELD Lakes in East Yorkshire offers fantastic fishing for anglers of all abilities.

Both High and Low Lakes are ringed by safe, comfortable fishing platforms – but this wasn’t always the case.

If you had visited the fishery around five years ago you would have seen broken platforms and unsafe banks.

Only after Andy and Linda Winfield took over the lakes that now bear their name did the renovation begin, and the venue is now an ideal destination for a peaceful day’s fishing, as well as offering excellent match sport.

Bags of more than 200lb are regularly taken, prompting Angling Times reporter Freddie Sandford to pay a visit...

“I headed to the fishery on a hot Sunday morning and decided to fish peg 9 of the High Lake, where I hopes inviting margins either side would tempt fish into the swim.

“A quick plumb around revealed shallow water throughout my peg, and I hoped this would attract fish in the warm conditions. Sadly this wasn’t the case – the carp were more interested in basking in the sun than feeding for most of the day, but as the light began to fade they moved into the margins and became far more catchable.

“All margin fishing is exciting, and at Winfield there’s no better way to target the lake’s carp. After I’d fed a few cups of groundbait down the edge, large

fish began to cruise in and feed hard on the spot. I lowered in a paste hookbait and watched a fish feed along the bank, moving steadily closer to my bait.

“Within moments my float buried and black Hydro poured from my top kit. A powerful fish surged into the lake, and after a spirited fight a common carp of around 5lb lay in my landing net.

“I repeated this process several times and landed several more carp to finish an enjoyable day. “The carp will now be feeding

hard in preparation for the winter, so get down to the fishery and fill your boots!”
