FIRST-TIME VISITOR BAGS A QUARRY POOL 52-POUNDER

- “I was about to reel in and recast but my mate said to leave the rods until the morning”

A FIRST-TIME visitor to a Staffordshire day-ticket complex has caught the venue’s biggestever fish.

This mighty mirror weighed in at 52lb 8oz from Quarry Pool, on the Baden Hall site, and obliterated Tony Beckinsale’s previous pb of under 30lb.

The pipe-lagger from Leigh, in Lancashire, told Carpfeed: “I was completely shocked. It’s taken a day for the capture to really sink in.”

The 53-year-old arrived at the venue on Sunday for a threenight session with three mates. He plotted up in peg three on the day-ticket specimen water.

“We got down on Sunday because we thought it would be quieter, but it turned out to be full,” said Tony.

“One of my mates has fished it quite a bit and we went in pegs one, two, three and four. He jumped into what he thought would be the best swim and I just went into three.

“To be honest, I started off fishing 4oz inline leads with stringers, but when I reeled in my

rigs were covered in weed.

“I switched to fishing pop-ups, but then one of my mates had a 32lb common on a PVA bag, so I decided to try that.

“On Tuesday evening I was about to reel in and recast but my mate said to leave the rods until the morning. I went back to the hut – each swim has a wooden shelter on Quarry – and was watching my rods when I noticed the tip of one of them just bend round. As I got to it it screamed off.

“I’ll be honest, my pb was in the twenties so I didn’t really know what to expect, but my mate said it was a lump and it was just circling about.

“We got it weighed correctly and witnessed by other anglers and it went 52lb 8oz – I was just shocked.” Tony used a Nash White Chocolate hookbait on a Fox readymade rig.
