WE CAN LEARN AS FAST AS THOSE PESKY FOREIGNERS!
That’s why the England lure squad will win gold very soon
WHEN it comes to lure fishing, we in the UK are playing catch-up with most, if not all, of Europe.
All is not lost, though. Not many years ago we brought tactics such as the waggler (the stick float never caught on abroad), slider and – more recently – feeders into international fishing. Look how well ‘Johnny Foreigner’ has done with them!
One drawback is that we don’t have the giant lakes and massive river systems of mainland Europe, nor do we have the option of using our own boats in many places.
What we do have is a group of anglers not only ready but desperate to learn, and I believe the current manager of the England lure squad, Steve Collett, is ideally placed to retain his role and carry the team forward.
The Angling Trust’s organisation of the event was faultless and highly praised by the visiting teams, and only the weather did its best to interfere, with Storm Callum playing havoc.
Next year is going to be difficult with South Africa as host nation. No pike, perch or zander in those parts, so how are we going to cope with largemouth and smallmouth bass, completely alien to us?
Well, if we send a team – no easy task in itself unless a generous sponsor can be found – they will return better equipped to catch our native species and in turn increase our knowledge of this fascinating and hugely exciting branch of angling.
