IS THERE anything finer in fishing than catching a big, fat specimen roach on a crisp autumn morning? No matter what your favourite type of fishing is, be it big carp, commercials, even match fishing, every true angler can appreciate a large redfin nestling at the bottom of their landing net.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been inundated with massive roach – fish well over the magical 2lb mark with some incredible specimens topping 3lb. That’s the fish of a lifetime!

We might have had a few chilly mornings recently but now really is the time to get out there and get one (or two) for yourself. Before you do, check out the gallery of fish we’ve got on pages 4&5 – it’s inspiring stuff.

This week we’re calling on our readers to take part in the new National Angling Survey, launched by the Environment Agency today.

The last survey, completed back in 2012, helped to ensure some ground-breaking changes were implemented to our rod licences, for example.

Thanks to you registering your views we saw the introduction of free permits for juniors to help recruitment, the creation of three-rod licences for carpers, and a big-value adult licence which now runs for 365 days from the day of purchase.

So what would you wish for now? There are lots of opinions floating around but I have a feeling that predation, from various sources, and the protection of our rivers and stillwaters will feature highly this time.

Make sure your voice is heard – find out more on P8&9.
