MAGGOTS COME INTO THEIR OWN FOR A 40lb 9oz COMMON
RICHIE Leat proved how deadly big bunches of maggots can be as a hookbait for big carp once autumn starts to turn to winter – by banking four fabulous fish from the New Forest Water Park.
Targeting clay spots amid the silt in the deepest part of the lake, Richie took a 40lb 9oz common as well a brace of fabulous scaly 30lb-plus mirrors and a long dark common, also over 30lb.
All the fish fell to a set-up Richie calls ‘The Mohawk’ rig, which resembles a standard Ronnie rig but has 15 maggots attached using bait floss.
Richie began his session by introducing a loosefeed mix of 2kg each of crumbed Dynamite Baits Monster Tiger Nut and Complex-T boilies, with particles, liquid attractors and oils and four pints of maggots added.
On the hook he used a Monster Tiger Nut pop-up which had been soaked beforehand in citrus oil.
Speaking about the effectiveness of the rig, Richie told Carpfeed: “I think the addition of the maggots triggers more senses in the carp, which is often enough to get them to feed at times when an all-boilie approach may not work as well.
“As well as the added movement they offer, I think that the maggots ‘pop’ in the carp’s mouth when they eat them, which is highly appealing to the fish. Also, they are mostly water, so they are incredibly easy to digest.”
