Venues to fish now

RECOMMENDED WOODLANDS, THIRSK, NORTH YORKSHIRE

-

A prolific head of silver fish awaits you at Woodlands lakes, where skimmers, roach and quality perch can all be caught in numbers.

in partridge and Skylark lakes maggots will work very well, and fishing these on a short pole line will produce. feed regularly with small amounts and set up a rig with lightly strung-out shot to fish through the water. This will enable you to intercept fish on the drop – you can expect bites just as your float settles.

on Kestrel lake there is an excellent head of small skimmers, and a pellet approach can work very well for these fish.

rather than feeding a large bed of bait for the fish to settle over, regularly introducing very small amounts of feed can work well. This stops the missed bites and foul-hooking incidents that are otherwise common when targeting skimmers, as well as leading to faster bites.

feeding a tiny pinch of micro pellets and a nugget of groundbait whenever bites slow down will keep the fish coming, and fishing at least 13m away from the bank will give them confidence.

it’s essential to use light tackle for the silvers, and a 0.09mm hooklength to a size 18 hook should keep you in touch with the fish. A light No5 elastic will stop the fish from swirling on the surface when hooked, while still being capable of landing any docile winter carp you may encounter, provided you take your time.
