LocaL lad Paul Wright walked away from Hayfield a massive £10,000 better off after winning this first of two big-money matches hosted by Dynamite Baits.

The Doncaster-based rod beating the heat and a strong field with a 114-780 haul of carp from peg 70 on the Island Lake. He was in front of recent UK Champs round winner on the same venue Jon Arthur with 103-030 who was on peg 80 on the same lake.

Given the baking weather, it was obvious that few carp would be feeding on the deck and Halkon Hunt/Willy Wormsbacked Paul decided on an allout shallow attack with loads of fish on the surface, setting up mugging rigs for the pole and a couple of pellet wagglers.

“I knew it would be a ‘shallow’ match and I wanted to draw anywhere with a bit of space. Peg 70 certainly wasn’t one I would have picked, but there were enough fish cruising about to give me hope,” Paul said.

“I fished anywhere from 9m to 14.5m at 1ft deep on the pole using a 6mm pellet on the hook and fed nothing, dobbing the bait in front of a swimming fish. It was slow to begin with but sport got better and better before slacking off in the final hour, when it became a case of picking off just occasional fish.”

Paul now goes automatically through to the second In the Mix match at Westwood Lakes in October where he’ll have another shot at winning £10,000. result: 1 P Wright, Halkon Hunt/Willy Worms, 114-780; 2 J Arthur, Matrix, 103-030; 3 C Edmunds, Browning/Spotted Fin, 82-600; 4 L Hardwick, Dynamite Baits, 72-600; 5 M Rodger, Mosella/Bag ‘Em Baits, /70-900; 6 J Hughes, Matrix/Spotted Fin, 65-325.
