Supercup 2019 Northern semi final

No practice, just watercraft, puts Hull-based team through

-

NO PRACTICE was needed for winners Westlands AC in the Angling Times/Bait-Tech Supercup Northen Semi-final.

An influx of cold water affected the fishing at Sheffield’s Aston Park Fisheries, but this helped produce an incredibly close match.

A weight of 30lb was enough for good section points, and a Westlands score of 23 secured victory for the team from Hull.

Team Trafford finished just a

two points behind the winners with 25 points. There was a tie on 27 points for third place, but Old Hough managed a section win, pushing them ahead of St Anthony’s AC on section countback.

Leigh Tackle and Bait Match Team were the other team to reach the final, and with a score of 35 points they will join the other semi-final winners at Barston Lakes in Solihull.

A delighted Westlands captain Mike Oldfield said: “We didn’t have any practice sessions but judged it on semi-final day based on what our guys had thought might work.”

Individual winner Shawn Leskiewicz was among the winning members of Westlands AC, and he topped a tight field with an excellent 53-0-0 from peg 15 on Bill’s Lake.

Despite usually being a canal and river angler, Shawn showed his versatility on the day:

“It’s not very far across, so I fished eight metres on the pole with dead maggot over groundbait,” he said.

“I just fished one line – however, I set up 10 rigs to cover all my options as I wasn’t sure what would work.

“I’ve spent the day using just one and landed 50 carp, six chub and one ide.

“I’ve really enjoyed it, as it’s something different from what I normally do.”
