Fishery of the Week Gem of a complex in the flatlands

Head Fen Lakes is full of pleasant surprises

-

Head Fen Lakes & Fisheries is located in the remote Cambridgeshire Fenlands and offers sensational sport with big carp and quality silver fish.

There are several lakes to go at here and each offers something different, from big bags of F1s to mixed skimmers and tench.

In addition to the lakes there is a variety of accommodation on offer at the peaceful Head Fen Country Retreat.

News Reporter Freddie Sandford recently visited the fishery on an incredibly windy day, but this certainly didn’t put the fish off…

LOTS OF OPTIONS

“After a quick chat with the fishery manager I was given a number of options of lakes to target... everything from a snake lake, where the pole will dominate, right through to waters where chucking a feeder can score very well.

“I decided to settle on Trev’s Lake which features a large central island to cast to, as well as a good mixed stock including carp to double figures, quality bream, tench, chub and barbel.

“With a powerful wind blowing in over the Fens I decided to keep things simple and stuck to fishing the margins and casting a small feeder to the island.”

EARLY SUCCESS

“Chucking tight to a tree stump on the island, it wasn’t long before my rod- tip was wrenched round and I was into a hardfighting Head Fen Carp weighing around 5lb.

“The following casts resulted in some immaculate little carp around the half- pound mark, as well as some larger fish that fought incredibly hard in the well- oxygenated water.

“After a few hours of hectic action the bites began to slow, so I decided to feed my left- hand margin with a mixture of micro pellets and groundbait with the hope of drawing a variety of species into the peg.”

MIXED MARGINS

“Baiting my hook with two dendrobaena worms and lowering it over my feed, it wasn’t long before the float buried and I was connected to a hard fighting fish that tore elastic from my pole.

“After a scrappy battle a stunning tench of around 4lb was netted, and after feeding the margin again I dropped back in and was immediately into a large common carp well into double figures.

“For the rest of the session I alternated between the feeder and the margins and landed something like 100lb of fish, including some clonking carp, a handful of quality tench as well as a bonus bream that rocked- up down the edge. “I had a brilliant day, and would highly recommend checking the

fishery out if you’re searching for a day’s bagging.

“Head Fen also offers evening tickets, and I think you could have a brilliant time targeting the edges on a quick after- work session. You really should give this fishery a try now.”
