This was a low-weight affair, with just 45-8-0 needed for victory. Saints angler Steve Boyd was the man to achieve that benchmark, using the bomb and pellet and corn down the edge of peg 31 for carp

to 8lb. Gary Baugh was second on 40-6-0 from peg 46.

Ash, Beech & Sycamore Pools (39 pegs) These lakes showed no signs of slowing down as Barry Zimmerman crashed out 191-10-0 to win. The Frenzee man was on peg 5 of Ash Lake and fished maggots on the short pole and in the margins for carp.

Canals aren’t renowned for big roach, but Tim Worsnop showed there are some hidden giants when he included a beast in his winning 13-4-0 netful. The Matrix Halifax man drew peg 2 at Battyford Basin and used chopped worm and caster at 13m for small roach and perch before the huge 2lb 8oz bonus redfin showed up.

Martin Blagbrough was next-best with 12-4-0 of caster caught roach.

A lot of anglers thought the fish would be sat on the deck, but Chris Smith’s winning shallow approach showed the majority were wrong. The Lingmere man

was on peg 4 of Big Max and worked with long pole and pellet in the upper layers for carp to double figures.

Covey Canal 1, Spey & Marsh Canal Lakes (33 pegs) The result certainly showed that winter is on its way as John Warburton needed just 59-6-0 to win. Drawn on peg 20 of Covey Canal One, he worked with maggot at 6m and in the margins for carp and F1s.

Peg 6 on Spey produced the runner-up in Mick Bown, who landed 56-10-0.

Come the weigh-in it was Mike Senior that took the spoils with 114-5-0. Using pellet and maggot from peg 40, the Warrington

Tackle and Guns man kept the carp and F1s coming throughout the day.

Second went to Franek Staniuszko, who picked peg 173 out of the draw bag and hauled out 108-11-0 from it.

brilliant 203-3-0. Drawn on peg 3 of Match Lake, the Matrix Halifax man used the pole and pellet for carp to 6lb.

Mark Rimmer made the bold decision to try and find the better stamp silvers, and it paid off in fine style. He used caster hookbait over hemp from the end peg at the football field and found roach and skimmers that contribute­d to his 7-4-0. Result: 1 M Rimmer, 7-4-0; 2 C Robinson, 5-12-8; 3 P Hughes, 4-5-8; 4 C Brunt, 3-14-0.

WIGAN DAA (SUN) Leeds & Liverpool Canal, Burscough (33 pegs)

There was never any doubt as to who had won this event as Steve Clegg steamrolle­d over his opponets. The Saints man was on the end peg by the car park and fished bread at 7m for 15-8-8 of bream and skimmers. Gordon Houlibecq was best of the rest with 8-9-8.
