At Albans Lakes, you can never be sure what species will take your bait next!

WATERS that offer unpredictability are always going to have a large following.

The buzz of not knowing what will pick up the bait next entices anglers to visit, excited at the prospect of catching a big bag made up of numerous species.

There are plenty of commercials that offer variety, but it is the stamp of everything that swims in Albans Lakes that makes this fishery stand out from the crowd.

Located in Hertfordshire, the three gravel pits – formerly known as Willows Lakes – cover almost 40 acres, and it’s tough to argue that they aren’t currently in the best form of their life.

Willows is the biggest of the bunch and is a banker for a double-figure carp, with lots of fish running from 10lb to 15lb.

Mirrors and commons are also the main focus on Farm Lake, where a 30lb specimen is a real possibility. The Match Lake is a different proposition altogether, however.

The bream fishing is up there with the best in the land, with fish ranging from anywhere between 2lb and 6lb. Huge catches can be put together on both long pole and feeder tactics.

Browns Angling and Preston Innovations-backed angler Graham West doesn’t have a bad word to say about the water, and he told Angling Times: “It truly is one of a kind. One moment you could be catching a big slab every chuck and the next you could have a run of hard-fighting carp. It’s worth mentioning that all of the carp here have stunning scale patterns and are in great condition.

“There’s also the chance of a

few real surprises such as a big perch.

“Every year I think the sport can’t get any better but somehow it keeps improving.”

On the hunt for something completely different from the norm? Get to Albans Lakes and see what all the fuss is about!
