THE RIG THAT WON Top match fishing advice

- JAMIE HUGHES

IT’S been a quiet fishing week by my standards and once I did manage to get on the bank things didn’t go to plan. One of the matches I fished ended at the drawbag!

I had three coaching sessions midweek and on Friday I was at Barston Lakes with the Matrix lads, doing a bit of filming and testing some new products.

On Saturday I headed to the Golden Reel Qualifier at Larford, a venue I know well and have had good results at, but on this day it wasn’t to be. I drew peg 25 on Speci Lake which, as anyone who knows the venue will tell you, gave me no prospect of a day’s fishing. It’s so bad that for the first time this year I didn’t even get the gear out of my van – I went home and had a day’s prepping.

Sunday saw me visit Blundells for the open, where I was hopeful of a better draw. Peg 5 on Trio Pool was where I ended up, and I fancied it.

Trio is around 18m wide but with lots of shallow bars that you can fish on. At my peg, the bar was around 13m out, and

I fished here with

6mm pellet and had a few, as well as dobbing and catching some shallow. I also had a great last 40 minutes fishing a top kit between my nets – a slightly unusual tactic but one that works really well at Blundells, as the fish aren’t really coming into the edges now.

Next week I’m busy filming with Andy May, and on Saturday I’m doing a ‘live match’ for our YouTube channel, which should be an interesting experience.
