WINNER BONES UP ON THE FEEDER TO CATCH IN THE HEAT
FOR the Midlands leg of this year’s Bait-Tech Supercup semi-finals the muggy, sultry weather found the F1s of Packington Somers in no mood to feed, and weights were on the low side.
Nonetheless, defending champions Fitters AC served their intent to retain the trophy with a fine win on 28 points. Joining them in the final are Tackle Shack Silver, second on 33, third-placed Oakengates Angling Centre on 37 and Tackle Shack Gold and Gerry’s of Nottingham in fourth and fifth places.
Individually, Oakengates man Dave Emlyn won a peg-to-peg battle with Fitters rod Danny Maxfield on Molands Mere, Dave getting the nod by 70-5-0 of carp and F1s to 64-11-0.
Fitters were led by Danny and Chris Hodgkiss with section seconds, fourths from Pete Westwood, Dave Williams and Simon Beck and 12 points from Kev Guest. Most sides had a bad result or two on a tricky day.
Winner Dave was handed fancied peg 45 on the scarecrow point on Molands Mere with Danny on next-door peg 46, and having watched a video on how to fish the peg the night before, Dave went forearmed.
“I decided on Method feeder to the island mud bank, caster shallow on the long pole and then the edges,” says Telford-based Dave. “The feeder was the only thing I could catch on, using banded double dead red maggot with either micro pellets or groundbait around the feeder. There were plenty of fish there cruising about, but they weren’t in the mood to feed.”
