FACTS COUNT, NOT JEALOUS OPINIONS!

“The BRFC has a task on its hands not to be influenced by the naysayers”

THE carp and perch records have been broken just days apart. Wow! There must be something in the air, or water, I reckon. All I can say to both captors is ‘well done!’

In the past, catches such as these would be roundly celebrated, but now the starting position seems to be controversy, judging by the reaction online. It seems that the green-eyed monsters of Facebook and the Flat Earth conspiracy theorists don’t agree with the weight, where and how the fish was caught, what colour T-shirt the captor was wearing, or even that it was caught at all.

All this controversy could lead to one or both of the captors not submitting a record claim or, if they do, the claim could be thrown out. The BRFC now has a task on its hands not to be influenced by the naysayers. Hopefully it’ll do the right thing.

The record list should be about fact, not opinion. Was the fish caught in the UK on rod and line? Is the weight correct and verified? Was the fish witnessed? If all these can be answered ‘yes’, then it’s a record. Facts are facts, like them or not.

In the 1980s the talented band Ultravox penned a song called Vienna. It was a classic, and fully deserved to be Number 1. But it was held off the top spot by the novelty song Shaddap You Face by comedian/singer Joe Dolce. It was a horrendous song that didn’t deserve to be there, but more people bought that song than bought Vienna. It’s facts that make records, not opinions.
