FISH FOR YOURSELF AND THE GROWTH OF THE SPORT

-

THIS past month has been a great one for carp fishing, but it hasn’t been without its low points. We potentially have a new record fish for the history books, but one that has been met with substantial debate within the sport.

There are many points of view, all of which are relevant, as to whether the record should stand or be claimed. What was disappointing to see, however, was some who criticised the venue, the captor or anyone who dared to target a fish of such a size.

Carp angling has changed a lot since the golden days. There are far more of us out there now targeting these amazing fish. Some want peace and quiet in natural surroundings, others want a social with friends and to catch a fish they can barely lift. It can’t be denied that a 75lb 2oz carp is an incredible sight, whatever its origins.

Luckily, I feel we are getting past the negative comment era and most of what I see on social media is anglers praising each other on their latest catches. There really is no need to criticise. Sure, some people’s photos of their prized catch might not be up to magazine standard, it might not look the claimed weight or it might be from a lake full of what you deem ‘wrong ’uns’. But if they’ve enjoyed the magical moment of hearing the alarm scream and landing their prize, as long as the fish is treated with respect on the bank, what’s the problem?

We are all on our own journey in carp fishing. The only thing that can stop any of us reaching our goals is time, dedication and access. Sharing each other’s knowledge as well as our highs and lows is what will keep this sport growing more than it already is. We have another great issue this month for those willing to learn from some of the sport’s most experienced minds, including an exclusive look at just how Wayne Mansford caught that monster Holme Fen carp. Enjoy! Chris Haydon,
