New champion in Lochgilphead

-

LOCHGILPHEAD Golf Club has a new lady champion after the second round of the ladies championship was played.

Following a score of 79 in the first round and 82 in the second, Margaret MacKinnon was crowned champion. She played some great golf and was a worthy winner of the Duncan’s Shield. Runner up was Kathleen Young with a combined score of 161.

The Oliver Trophy for the nett stableford went to Jane Hepburn with a total of 70 points and Donna McKellar was runner up with 68 points. The course was in outstanding condition and the ladies would like to thank Robbie Wilson and greens staff for their hard work.

The gents played the first round of their championship on Saturday June 18 along with the Downhill Cup for the over 50s. Leading the scratch competition is captain Ryan McGlynn with a score of 67. In joint second place with scores of 71 are Ruaridh Brown and Alastair MacVicar.

Ali Provan is in the lead in the handicap competition with a nett 55 while Ruaridh Brown and Tom Campbell are in joint second place with a nett 62. Tom Campbell won the Downhill Trophy although, with his youthful looks, it’s hard to believe he qualifies for this competition.

Unfortunately, the second round of the championship was cancelled at lunchtime on Sunday because of bad weather but this was after Keith Cowan excelled himself by scoring a hole in one at the fifth. As local golfers will know, this is the hardest hole on the course. Well done Keith and thanks for the drink.

The juniors played on Friday evening for the Angus Stableford Trophy. One new competitor, Lewis Cameron, won with a fantastic 26 points and runner up was Murray MacDonald with 21 points.

The clubhouse was a busy place on Thursday June 16 at the prize bingo organised by Joyce Cameron. A great night was had by everyone and it was a great boost to club funds.
