Not so hairy among the fairy cakes at Mid Argyll Show

-

A FAMILIAR face visited the Macmillan Cancer Support mar- quee at last week’s Mid Argyll Show.

But volunteers at the charity’s annual celebration of home-baking had to perform a double take as Argyll and Bute MP Brendan O’Hara appeared with distinctly less hair than usual.

Mr O’Hara decided to have his head shaved in support of Macmillan Cancer Support after his brother Diarmid was diagnosed with lung cancer last month.

He said: ‘In the weeks since his diagnosis, Diarmid and his wife Yvonne have shown the most incredible courage in refusing to lie down to this disease. Their determination to fight and fight and keep on fighting has been absolutely inspirational. I wanted to do something positive to support him and when I saw the ‘Brave the Shave’ campaign I immediately signed up.

Important

‘There cannot be a family in Argyll and Bute which hasn’t been affected in some way by cancer and I felt it was important to show solidarity, not just with my brother but with everyone else currently fighting this awful disease.’

The tent at Mid Argyll Show is a significant fundraiser for the Lochgilphead and District branch of Macmillan Cancer Support, tempting people to part with their cash in return for delicious home-baking. Far from being deterred by the damp weather, the hardy volunteers raised £1,932.92 on the day. The committee thanked everyone for supporting the charity and for donations of baking. Thanks were also extended to the show committee and others for their help in making it happen.

Brendan O’Hara added: ‘I reckon I’ll look pretty awful for a few weeks but it will grow back and, to be honest, at 53 years old I’m just happy to still have enough hair that I can shave it off.’

A video of the head shave can be seen on the Brendan O’Hara MP Facebook page and there is still time to donate by visiting www.bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/brendan-OHara.
