YOUNG athletes from Argyll excelled at the Scottish age group championships held over the past two weekends at Grangemouth – winning three gold and three silver medals.

Finbar Dunne from Oban was outstanding in the under15 throwing events, winning gold with a bit to spare in both the shot putt and discus and recording distances of 13.75m and 42.73m. He now looks forward to competing in the UK championships this weekend at Bedford.

Finbar’s older brother Paddy won a silver for second place in the under-17 javelin, throwing 58.49m, and he also travels to Bedford this weekend.

Jilly Lefebvre, from Kilmichael Glassary and a member of Mid Argyll Athletic Club, won gold in the under-13 high jump, clearing a new PB of 1.46m. Jilly cleared every height on her first attempt and narrowly failed at 1.5metres.

Another Mid Argyll athlete, Jodie Robertson, jumped to a new PB in the under-15 triple jump, recording 9.55m to finish fourth and only missed the bronze by seven centimetres.

Grace Thompson from Oban won silver in the under-15 discus with 28.18m and also did well in the high jump and triple jump.

The Campbell brothers from Glenbarr excelled in the middle distance events with the younger Gregor winning silver for his second place in the under-13 1,500metres in a time of four minutes 45.6 seconds while Cameron reached the final of the under-15 1,500 metres, finishing in eighth place in four minutes 40.4 seconds.
