Climbing to the light for caring charity

-

CLIMBING a mountain in the dark might appear a daunting prospect, but two Mid Argyll women have done just that.

Delores Firth from Ormsary and Ruth Carruthers of Ardrishaig took part last month in a charity trek up Ben Nevis in aid of the charity CARE International.

The trek began at 3am, so most of the climb was done in darkness by the light of head torches.

A mild, dry moonlit night helped a great deal, and the good weather held throughout the trek.

Sunrise at the summit was the aim, but they were still some way off the mountain top as the day dawned.

But Delores and Ruth were able to bask in the sun and enjoy superb views over Lochaber from the summit, before the long descent.

Emergency aid

A group of 16 completed the climb, with all the money raised going to the work of CARE, which delivers emergency aid in more than 70 countries worldwide and invests in schemes to help individuals and communities become self-sustaining and less reliant on aid. CARE International was already working in Haiti before the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew recently and had prepared emergency packs for families made homeless by the flooding.

Between them Delores and Ruth have raised more than £1,300, and would like to thank the many generous supporters in Mid Argyll, as well as those further afield who have helped them reach such a great total.
