Gallon of cash for Tarbert marathon woman

-

A TARBERT publican poured more than £400 from a bottle full of coins which customers collected for a multiple marathoner.

Duggie and Margaret MacNeill keep a gallon whisky bottle on their Corner House bar and last Saturday presented the contents, £435.18, to Carolyn McAlpine.

Carol, 32, is a Beatson unit ambassador who has completed nearly half a million steps in a 15 consecutive marathons quest.

Pub regulars also contributed £95 through a raffle and the MacNeills added £69.82 to round up the total to £600.

The publicans laid on a sandwich buffet for Carolyn’s many supporters who turned up to see her collect the money, adding to the £24,000 she has raised for the cancer charity.

Margaret said: ‘The Beatson unit helps so many people in the area so it was natural for us to support Carolyn’s fundraising efforts.

‘In addition, we gave Carolyn a couple of large bags of Jelly Babies which she eats as she runs.

Wrappers

‘We were told during a training run she had stashed some, but her friends got there first to leave Carolyn just empty wrappers.

‘It is great to be able to thank Carolyn for her mammoth effort.’

‘The run was not your average October break for an HR manager,’ said Carolyn.

‘I got a stress fracture in one foot and plenty of blisters despite using worn-in shoes.

‘But by the time you get to the last marathon, it is not too bad because your body is as sore as it is going to get.

‘I am having a rest week, though I’ll still be out as a leader with Jog Scotland.’
