Gong for music

-

A MID Argyll lady has been honoured for services to music in the 2017 New Year Honours List.

THIS year’s New Year Honours list saw almost 1,200 people receiving awards, including Mid Argyll’s Sheila McCallum.

The honours recognise the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people across the UK.

Listed amongst famous faces - such as Andy Murray and Mo Farah, both receiving knighthoods for their services in their respective sports - Sheila McCallum was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to music in Mid Argyll.

A BEM is awarded to someone who has provided a hands-on service to the local community and as a result has made a significant difference to that area.

Sheila received her award for her incredible involvement and impact on music in Mid Argyll - from being a founder and organiser of Mid Argyll Music Festival since 1981, her work with the former Corran Singers, now Dalriada Singers, to chairing Mid Argyll Arts Association.

Commenting on her award Sheila said: ‘I was overcome with emotion when I opened the letter. I just could not believe it. I really am honoured to have even been nominated.

‘I can look back on what I have done and achieved with pleasure. Music is a part of me and I am overwhelmed to be recognised for doing something I love.’

Also on the honours list was Susie Wolff from Oban, who received an MBE for services to women in sport, and Margaret Ann Worsley from Tiree, who was awarded a BEM for her voluntary services to the community of the island.

John Campbell of Glenrath Farms, originally from Strachur, received a kinght-hood for his services to farming and charitable service to entrepreneurship.
