Sailing success for Argyll
SUCCESS for Argyll at the RYA Scotland awards.
THE SAILING community from around Scotland gathered to recognise the achievements of Scotland’s volunteers, coaches, instructors, officials, clubs and performance sailors.
The theme was very much one of ‘family’ at last Saturday’s RYA Scotland awards, emphasising the support network that enables the range of activity represented across the 10 award categories.
Among the highlights at the event, held at Glasgow Science Cen- tre, was the coach of the year accolade handed to Alasdair Young from Tarbert for his creative coaching techniques with class academies and in clubs.
Amazing
Alasdair said: ‘I have been working as a coach for nearly 12 years now at varying levels, and to even be associated with some of the past winners of the award, let alone to win, is an amazing compliment.’
The volunteer of the year award went to Billy Fortieth of Oban Sailing Club for his lifelong dedication to support both the club and the local RNLI.
‘I am very touched to receive this award and simply enjoy helping others to enjoy the beautiful waters around Oban,’ said Billy.
The instructor of year accolade was given to Team 15 Windsurfing instructor Calum Nicol.
His enthusiasm at club level or at the annual Tiree Wave Camps played a big part in his recognition.
He said: ‘Thanks to all the instructors who I have worked with as I have taken all the successful techniques into my own sessions, so they deserve this award as well.’
Ewan MacPherson, vice-chairman of RYA Scotland, said: ‘Congratulations to all the winners and nominees.
Delighted
‘We are delighted to hear about what they have been doing over the past year and we are sure it is a small example of what is going on across the country.’
