Home-baking passes Freddie’s taste test

-

FREDDIE Mclellan was particularly impressed by the high standard of home-baking on offer at the ZamScotEd coffee morning on Saturday February 18.

Visiting his grandparents, James and Alexis Mclellan, Freddie was more than happy to accompany them to the coffee morning in his quest to sample as much Argyll baking as possible on his holiday to Mid Argyll.

CHILDREN in Zambia will be helped out following a Lochgilphead coffee morning.

Mid Argyll-based charity ZamScotEd – formerly the Mthunzi and Lilanda Initiative – has been supporting the education of vulnerable children in Zambia since the 1990s.

With the help of Argyll communities, churches, trusts and Mission Scotland, the charity is in phase two of building a new St Columba’s Secondary School. The school is being built in an area just outside Lusaka, where no secondary education was previously available.

Two grades – years eight and nine – are now up and running, providing secondary education to 80 students who previously had no access to education after primary school.

High on the charity’s wish list, and one of the Zambian Education Ministry’s requirements for a secondary school, is a playing field for sports.

At the coffee morning, held on Saturday February 18, ZamScotEd board member Marian Pallister explained: ‘The ground has been cleared, but not sufficiently, so we are hoping to put the money raised towards this.

‘The playing field will have specific areas – an area for the girls to play netball, somewhere for football and a track.

‘It won’t just be for the school but for Mthunzi Orphanage too, so they will all benefit.

‘Our thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a success and to everyone who came along on the day. And to the people of Mid Argyll who have supported all our work in Zambia, we couldn’t have achieved it without you.’

More than £330 was raised at the coffee morning.
