Finley on mission to raise cash for volunteer trip
A LOCHGILPHEAD High School pupil is on a mission to raise cash for his year abroad volunteering.
Finley Moody, 17, from Tayvallich, will be setting off for Guyana, South America at the end of summer, to work as a volunteer teacher with Project Trust.
Finley will be teaching maths and science within the Guyanese rainforest to children as young as primary school age or those in their final years of education.
Finley explained: ‘Guyana is a developing country and to capitalise on its resources it is putting a heavy emphasis on expanding education in science and technology, but further education is very under staffed.
‘I am currently studying for my Advanced Highers and Highers in physics, art, chemistry and graphic communications, so want to be able to share what I know with others.
‘I enjoy volunteering and helping others – I am a sports leader at school and I also do paired reading. I want the opportunity to help, even if it’s only in a small way, some of those who are disadvantaged in the world.
‘But I also want to develop my own skills and I think this is a challenge that will help me do that. I want to experience a completely new culture and have entirely new experiences. I’m hoping to go on and studying architecture at university but because it is a long seven-year course I want to try something different before I start studying.’
Finley has a fundraising target of £6,200 that will be used by Project Trust towards the planning of the trip and support throughout the year.
To help him on his way pupils and staff at Lochgilphead High School got involved with a non-uniform day and coffee morning on Friday February 24.
Finley hopes to continue his fundraising efforts with a ceilidh and various sponsored challenges. For more information visit Finley’s online donation page: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/finleymoody
