Tasty competition for Mid Argyll rural ladies
A DAY of keen competition for Mid Argyll SWI institutes was accompanied by some delicious home baking, served up by some cheery volunteers.
A RURAL gathering would not be the same without delicious home baking, and that’s exactly what was being served at the Mid Argyll SWI group coffee morning.
Lochgilphead Parish Church Hall was filled with friends and members of institutes from Kilmichael Glassary, Ford, Tarbert and Lochgilphead for the event, at which the beautiful Kilmartin cloth was on display.
There was baking, but it would not have been a Rural gathering without a competition, and last Saturday’s coffee morning also saw Mid Argyll institutes compete in contests for embroidery with an Easter theme, savoury biscuits and three-fruit marmalade.
Judges Mavis Yuill of Kilmartin and Lochgil- phead’s Pat Cairns performed the tricky job of judging the entries, before the winners were announced.
The Kilmartin cloth, awarded for embroidery, was won by Lochgilphead SWI.
Ford institute was the winner of the Mid Argyll SWI group silver salver for three types of savoury biscuit. The marmalade competition was won by Jean McIvor of Kilmichael Glassary for her preserve made from orange, lemon and red grapefruit.
Jean now goes on to represent Mid Argyll in the Argyll SWI federation competition later this year. Jean told the
Advertiser: ‘I’ve never won this before, so I’m pleased.’
She added: ‘I’m a wee bit surprised, because I didn’t think it was that good when I tasted it. I would have preferred a white grapefruit, but you can’t get them these days.’
The coffee morning raised just over £500 for SWI funding.
