Thought for the Week

- With Marilyn Shedden

IN TIMES gone by we could always see what an attack on us actually meant.

We could see the effect it had on a city which was bombed or a ship which was torpedoed.

We could witness first hand the devastating effect of bombs or bullets or blasts on a people who suffered the consequences of war. Now we are victims of ‘cyber attacks’.

How do we deal with the enemy within? How do we deal with someone who wants to destroy the infrastructure of our society? How do we deal with this silent threat? How do we reason with those who simply want to eliminate all that is good in our world?

How do we understand those who would halt the emergency procedure for a heart bypass by rendering the necessary computer useless?

How do we understand those who wish to rob people of their opportunity to have chemotherapy?

How do we understand this part of human nature which just wants to destroy?

We are horrified by the threat of cyber attacks and we don’t know what we can do to avert such disasters.

It is quite amazing to think how low the human spirit can sink when we can compare the heights to which it can reach.

It is quite incomprehensible to even try to understand a mindset which would jeopardise so many lives for arrogant self-satisfaction.

In the midst of all of this horror, we are reminded that we are all one in our troubles.

It is difficult to imagine what kind of strange pleasure anyone can find in damaging the possibility of healing. Whatever those who perpetrate this hatred gain from their vile practice, we will always rise above it.
