Charity challenge

Lochgilphead’s Jimmy gets on his bike for charity

-

A LOCHGILPHEAD man is half way through an action-packed challenge to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis sufferers.

INSPIRED by his son-inlaw, a Lochgilphead man pedalled his way from Callander to Killin and back as part of a challenging fundraising push.

On Saturday April 29, Jimmy McCallum, accompanied by fellow fundraiser Graeme MacPherson, successfully cycled 48 miles of open road in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Not content with that, Jimmy is now going to abseil from the Forth Bridge to try to boost the fundraising total.

The pair have been inspired by Jimmy’s sonin-law, Thomas Welch, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, to embark on the sponsored cycle and do their bit to raise awareness of the condition.

Jimmy said: ‘I was inspired by the bravery and determination of my son-in-law, Thomas, who suffers from this terrible illness. Tommy is an inspiration to many CF sufferers, but also others facing adverse circumstances in life.’

Graeme outlined that the cost of treating cystic fibrosis is staggering and so the pair simply want to raise as much cash as possible to allow sufferers to get the treatment they need.

Graeme said: ‘Hopefully, our efforts will help give Tommy strength, make a difference for new sufferers so they too grow into adulthood, have family of their own and hasten the day a cure is found.’

Having completed the arduous cycle last month, Jimmy now faces a nerve-wracking abseil from the Forth Bridge this Sunday May 28.

‘It’s something I’ve never done before,’ Jimmy said, ‘but I wanted to show that living with CF, isn’t just a challenge for one day, but every week, every month.’
