Big finish to the league season for Red Star

-

IN THEIR final game of the season, Red Star travelled to Paisley on Saturday and ended the campaign with a thumping 9-0 victory over the league’s bottom side.

Star looked to get on the front foot and assert pressure early. Gregor Peacock opened the scoring after 15 minutes. Finding himself well positioned to receive a Ben Forbes pass from the edge of the box, he finished high into the net to make it 1-0.

Star doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Rab Docherty’s deflected strike from 20 yards fooled the keeper and put Star in command at 0-2 up.

Into the second half and Star began to turn the screw, stretching the play with some nice passing moves.

Kieran Moore found himself on the end of another neat through ball from Ben Forbes and hammered his shot past the keeper to make it 0-3.

It was 0-4 soon after as Rab Docherty once again supplied the finish to put the result beyond doubt after another excellent passing move.

Star were well in command now and added to their tally from the spot with Rab Docherty dispatching the penalty after Ciaran McPhie was fouled in the box.

Ciaran McPhie got on the score sheet for number six when he finished stylishly from 25 yards, lobbing the stranded goalkeeper, before Kieran Moore doubled his tally for the afternoon when he added goal number seven.

Rab Docherty netted his fourth soon after, securing the golden boot award for the season.

The Star backline of Luke Naisby, Andy Weir and Kyle Selfridge were treated to a quiet afternoon with keeper Pollock a virtual spectator.

Colin Weir rounded off the day’s scoring after reacting to a deflected cross from James McGuinness to put the ball into the empty net.

The result sees Red Star finish in third place in Premier 2A, just one point below second placed East Kilbride YM.

The team now look forward to their awards night on June 17 before getting back to pre-season and looking to mount a title challenge next season.
