Singing to win at Mòd
MID ARGYLL singers had a successful trip to the Oban and District Mòd last week.
OBAN proved to be a happy hunting ground for Mid Argyll competitors in last week’s local Mòd.
At Oban and District Provincial Mòd last Friday and Saturday, Inveraray’s Feorlin Renton won the Argyll and Bute Council Cup for the second year in succession in the girls and boys aged 7-8 learners competition, singing their own choice of song.
Fellow Inveraray pupils Rosie Blyth and Autumn Tierney-Clark also competed in this large class in what was their first provincial Mod competition.
In the choral classes, Coisir Og Dhail Riata won the two-part harmony 13-18 years, singing two songs of their own choice.
Back in the solos, in the girls own choice 9-10 for learners, Ashley MacDougall from Inveraray took first place.
The 11-12 years category for learners was won by another Inveraray pupil, Tilly Cunningham.
Inveraray had further success in the girls own choice, 13-15 age group, with Brodie Crawford coming first, ahead of Lochgilphead’s Eilidh Graham in second place. Brodie also won the silver pendant for the highest aggregate marks over two competitions.
Among the boys’ competitions, Angus MacLean of Lochgilphead won the prescribed song, 13-15 years. Angus went on to win the boys’ silver pendant for the highest mark in aggregate over two competitions. In the equivalent competition for girls, Eilidh Graham from Lochgilphead took home the first prize.
A well-known face and voice in Mid Argyll singing circles, Holly Renton, won the boys’ and girls’ own choice 16-18 years competition.
Away from the vocal competitions, Calum MacDonald from Lochgilphead achieved first place for accor- dion, playing a set of three Gaelic waltzes.
Among the senior competitions, the Puirt-a-Beul own choice contest was won by Lochgair’s Shona Keith, who took first prize again in the competition for a song written by an Argyll bard. Shona also won the second prize in the prescribed songs, male or female competition.
