Big day out at soccer festival

-

TEAMS from Lochgilphead Soccer Centre headed to Campbeltown last Saturday to take part in one of Argyll’s most popular football festivals.

The Soccer Centre had entered teams in all age groups from primary one through to primary five, with more than 45 youngsters making the journey south to represent the Lochgilphead club.

The festival is one of the most popular in the area with more than 400 children from Argyll and beyond taking part. There were two teams from Lochgilphead in the primary one, 2011 age group, and it was their first festival. The team had a fantastic time playing seven games of fun fours football against teams from Campbeltown, Tarbert, Lochnell, Dumbarton and Helensburgh. The primary two team, 2010 age group, also played fun fours. They won five of the seven games they played and were thrilled with their day out.

At the primary 3, 2009 age group, the youngsters stepped up to playing five, rather than four-a-side. The Soccer Centre had one team at this age group. In a strong section, the children never gave up and worked really hard over the day. Fresh from their first festival trip to Islay a few weeks ago, the Soccer Centre fielded one team in the primary 4, 2008 age group. They played a total of five matches of seven-a-side winning four and drawing one. The primary five, 2007 age group, saw two teams from Lochgilphead – Atletico and Dynamo. Having trained and played together for a few years these players are becoming quite experienced. Both teams played a total of four matches each of seven-aside against Ardencaple, Helensburgh, Campbeltown and Calderglen Thistle.

Bruce West of the Soccer Centre, said: ‘All the Lochgilphead teams did really well and their coaches were very pleased. We would like to thank Campbeltown and District Juvenile Football Association, in particular David Paterson and his volunteers for putting on an excellent festival once again.’
