World’s best face formidable caber at Inveraray Games

-

FOR THE eighth year running, the Inveraray Highland Games will be hosting the World Caber Championships.

Sponsored by the George Hotel, this prestigious event attracts the highest calibre of athletes from all over the world – from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Poland and Germany – to compete against Scotland’s own homegrown talent.

A true test of skill and physical prowess, the caber used at the World Championships is one of the biggest on the circuit, measuring over 20 feet and weighing in at over 140lbs.

With its beautiful location at the head of Loch Fyne, the Inveraray Highland Games will be held on Tuesday July 18 in the grounds of Inveraray Castle, where they are opened by the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell.

Throughout the day there will be plenty of family games, great food and drink, souvenir shopping, side shows and a children’s activity tent.

The games committee will also be welcoming 40 American guests from the Clan Campbell Association of North America, and around 60 French visitors from Helensburgh’s twin town of Thouars, France.

The games celebrate Argyll’s rich Highland culture and the oneday event showcases all the traditional Highland Games, harking back to the warrior clan days.

There is the usual mix of track and ‘heavy’ events for the sporty visitors, while both Scottish Highland dancing and solo piping will appeal to those with a more artistic bent.

Inveraray Highland Games are also delighted that Loch Fyne Oysters and Clan Campbell Scotch Whisky continue to support the Games as main sponsors.

The Inveraray and District Pipe Band, recently crowned Grade One British Champions, will parade through the town at 10.45am with the main events commencing shortly afterwards.
