Record numbers compete in badminton championships
THE ARGYLL and Bute primary schools badminton championships at Mid Argyll Sports Centre have been hailed as a big success.
Almost 100 young players travelled to Lochgilphead for the championships on Monday June 19 from schools as far afield as Arrochar, Campbeltown, Oban and Mull.
Councillor Donnie MacMillan presented the prizes after an excellent day of competitive badminton.
Anne Littleson, Argyll and Bute area organiser for primary school badminton, said: ‘It has been a great day and a whole new event. This is about the sixth or seventh year, but it’s the first time we’ve had it on a weekday and in Lochgilphead. We had much larger numbers than ever before, with pupils from all over Argyll and Bute.
‘We are very grateful to the pupils, parents and teachers for making the effort to come along to the event, and thanks also to Lochgilphead Joint Campus and Donnie for presenting the medals. The support of Active Schools and sports leaders is very much appreciated – and thanks as well to the Lochgilphead secondary pupils who performed umpiring duties so well.’
Medal winners were: girls singles’ – Anneloes Hutton, Dervaig Primary; boys’ singles – Morgan Gemmell, Park Primary; girls’ doubles – Lois Norrie and Aimee MacPhail; boys’ doubles – Morgan Gemmell and Innes McCallum, Park Primary; mixed doubles – Ryan Shields and Annabel Semple.
